Drawing at Dewey Beach
Jerry
and I attended a fundraiser hosted by a dozen of our local animal rescue
organizations in Humboldt County, CA, where the display of jackets by
artist Susan Lewis caught my eye immediately. I coveted each displayed
example! I bid on the prospect of having the artist design one just for
ME - with greyhounds all over it instead of poodles!
When
my high bid of $450 won the silent auction and I met with the artist to
discuss possibilities, Ms. Lewis asked if I would prefer to have a wall
hanging to use for our OWN fundraiser! I could hardly refuse, knowing
that Jerry's and my personal contribution would be helping local rescues,
and that the resulting prize could raise way more for greyhounds - a win-win
situation!
That
Ms. Lewis would contribute one of her jackets for local organizations
and then change the prize to a piece involving 4 times the effort she'd
planned, says a lot about her personal priorities, animal welfare being
at the top of the list.
Susan
Lewis has a 30-year history in fabric art, having provided uniquely designed
pieces for Nieman Marcus, I Magnin, and numerous boutique shops in the
days when she was sewing for a living. Now, residing in Blue Lake, CA, with
her husband Terry and much adored Standard Poodles, Miki and LuLu, Ms.
Lewis has extended her talent to tend a garden any horticulturist would
envy and sews more for entertainment than income. (Does any artist ever
"retire?)
Susan
Lewis' creations can still be purchased in a few boutiques in San Francisco,
like Kati
Koos, who also carries a huge variety of potholders like those
created especially for Northcoast Greyhounds. See them on our
Enhance Your Home
page. That's Katie, herself, pictured to the right, next to two Susan
Lewis jackets in her shop, which we visited while attending the SF Gift
Show. These two jackets are priced for sale at $600 and $650 respectively,
so we consider the value of this 4' X 6' wall hanging to be well over
$1000.
We
feel unbelievably fortunate to have found such a creative and talented
artist (especially one who favors depicting animals above all other subjects)
right here in our Humboldt neighborhood. Just WAIT 'til you see her soft
sculptures and Christmas Stockings in some future "Hunt for Greyt
Treasure" benefit auction! (If
you've the time and the inclination, you'll find this Collection
of other Susan Lewis art forms thoroughly enjoyable. DO click the slide show option to get the full effect!)
